To celebrate the launch of ChronoPulse, we invited hundreds of watch enthusiasts to a special get-together at The Campbell Apartment in New York, a historic and richly appointed venue inside Grand Central Station. We toasted the new index over custom cocktails and, of course, plenty of incredible watches.
A New Watch Index Informed by Industry Experts
We recruited the expertise of industry leaders from around the world to help build and refine this new tool.
- Dr. Brendan Cunningham is a professor of Economics at Eastern Connecticut State University. He is also the author of Selling the Crown: The Secret History of Marketing Rolex, and the founder of Horolonomics, an online publication covering the intersection of watches and economics.
- Jack Wong is a renowned watch collector and accomplished banker based in Singapore. His personal collection includes major brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Blancpain, but he also has a passion for independent watchmakers like Armin Strom and F.P.Journe. He has been interviewed by notable watch publications such as Revolution, Quill & Pad, and Deployant.
- Kristian Haagen is a watch industry reporter and photographer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. He has written more than a dozen books on watches throughout his career.
- Eric Wind is one of the world’s most respected and influential dealers of vintage watches. Before founding Wind Vintage, Eric served as VP of Watches at Christie’s auction house and was a frequent contributor to Hodinkee. He also cohosts the Significant Watches podcast. Eric is known for his unwavering commitment to quality and for his many celebrity clients.
How does ChronoPulse work?
Based on more than 600,000 transactions and validated by industry experts, ChronoPulse analyzes the performance of the 14 watch brands – and 140 watch models – with the highest transaction volume on the pre-owned market. Using the sales data of over 4.6 million data points, ChronoPulse gives incomparable transparency to sales trends and provides the most realistic representation of the market. The price index also uses a mix of new and used watches, plus different variants for each reference. To build ChronoPulse, Chrono24 uses its own anonymous first-party sales data to drive the indexing. The use of actual sales data – not just asking prices – is what sets ChronoPulse above the competition.
Data specialists and economic experts developed ChronoPulse based on the Laspeyres index. The Laspeyres index allows a comparison of the cost of a fixed set of items from one period to the next. The data are updated daily, while the selection and weighting of the individual manufacturers and watch models are updated and adjusted every 6 months. ChronoPulse will continue to improve and expand in the coming months and years, with specialized sub-indexes planned for the future.
