Excerpt from watch-wiki:
"Charles Le Roy - French watchmaker: ... Born in 1765 as the son of Bazile Le Roy. However, the watchmaking dynasty founded by his father only achieved great fame through Bazile-Charles when he opened the Galerie de Pierre in the Palais-Royal around 1785 and after the Duke of Orleans, Philippe Egalité, opened the royal palace gardens and the buildings around the Palais-Royal to the public and allowed trade to take place there. This allowed Leroy to employ a number of other watchmakers in his establishment, the Galerie de Pierre in the arcades of the Royal Palace Gardens.
With the onset of the French Revolution (from 1789 to 1799) and the social changes it brought, Leroy reacted both in the naming of his firm and in the signature of its watches: The firm was from then on called La rue Egalité (Street of Equality or Equality), and the compromising name signature of the watches (Le Roy = the King) was replaced by the anagram Elyor. During this period, Leroy made many watches for high-ranking personalities: A grand watch for Napoléon Bonaparte, for his mother Princess Pauline, for Napoléon's youngest brother Jérôme Bonaparte. Le Roy participated in exhibitions in Paris in the year vi (of the French Revolutionary Calendar, i.e. 1798) and again in 1819, 1823 and 1827.
Basile-Charles Le Roy was very innovative and received a patent for one of his atmospheric clocks in 1823. Besides this particular clock, there are two other mantel clocks (pendulums) made by him in the War Ministry in Paris. He was also the maker of clocks known as Montre (Médaillon) à Tact. The progressiveness of the new pocket watch movements of Lépine and Breguet caught Leroy's attention very early. In 1805, in order to make these innovations work for him, he developed a lever escapement with a pin escapement wheel. Some time later, Bazile-Charles constructed a special version of the duplex escapement. In 1815, the company moved its headquarters to Galerie Montpensier 13-15, Palais-Royal, residing here for almost a century. In 1828, his son, Louis-Charles Le Roy, became co-owner of the company. From then on, the watches were signed Le Roy et Fils. From 1829, the firm worked as court watchmakers for the Dukes of Bourbon and Chartres. ..."
